Finland’s model and maternal health discussed at UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

The annual Forum reviews progress in attaining the global sustainable development goals (SDGs). Finland’s model of implementing the goals has attracted wide attention.

At the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) starting on Monday 10 July, Finland will present examples of how various actors in a broad spectrum in society can be committed to the goals set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Wide participation is considered to be a precondition for attaining the UN SDGs by the set date. While implementing the SDGs at the national level, Finland has created models that have attracted interest, such as Society's Commitment to Sustainable Development, through which different actors can make pledges to promote sustainable development. In the autumn, Finland will introduce a new system for monitoring and measuring progress in attaining the SDGs at national level.

“This is one example of models through which anyone can take part in the discussion relating to the progress made in the implementation and bring their voice to the discussion online,” says Sami Pirkkala, Counsellor and 2030 Agenda coordinator at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

At the HLPF, Finland will also encourage discussion on the rights of women and girls. At a side event organised in cooperation with Plan International Finland, the Finnish maternity pack and a maternity pack for 11-year-olds will be presented. The purpose of the latter is to call attention to the number of underage mothers.

“Finland’s support for sexual and reproductive health and rights promotes the UN’s goals concerning poverty reduction, equality and health,” Pirkkala notes.

Finland’s delegation is led by State Secretary Risto Artjoki. This year's HLPF focuses on the goals related to poverty eradication, food and food security, health, industrialisation, and infrastructure and the state of the oceans.  The meeting is held in New York on 10–19 July.
